Hungary has no near-term plans for Eurobond issuance - debt office

Portfolio
Hungary has no near-term plans to issue Eurobonds - government bonds issued in major foreign currencies like the dollar, euro or yen - the deputy head of the country's debt office said on Wednesday.
The announcement is no surprise, given that one of the objectives of the state is to keep lowering the country’s foreign currency debt. That is why it has been refraining from major Eurobond issuances for years. However, the Government Debt Management Agency (ÁKK) did go to the market with smaller issuances (and had bond swaps too), which primarily served market building purposes. It is not useless to have the right amount of instruments on the market that could lead to some meaningful pricing. This helps issuances should it come to that, and the market’s assessment of the country risk is also quantifiable, which is useful information.

In light of that, it is understandable why the ÁKK official added the following:

In the coming years our foreign currency debt will remain relatively low, so we are seeing market possibilities but in the near future there is no plan for similar transactions

, Reuters reported András Réz as saying at Euromoney's annual global bond investors forum.
