The last day to pay with the old 1,000 forint bills issued before 2017 is 31 October when the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) will withdraw them for circulation, the bank announced on Tuesday.

As of 1 November 2018, only the new 1,000 forint bills first issued in March this year will be accepted in stores. Businesses will no longer be obliged to accept them after the 31 October deadline.

The old bills are not losing their value; every post office and bank replace them with legal bills for another three years, and the central bank replaces them free of charge for 20 years.

By the last days of October, 81% of the 1,000 forint bills have been replaced.
