Major change coming: János Lázár introduces restrictions on 262 kilometres of roads

In the future, transit and freight traffic over 20 tonnes passing through Hungary will only be allowed to travel on routes determined by the ministry, primarily on the expressway network, the minister wrote in a Facebook post.

We are introducing new rules and transforming rural, local traffic organisation: we are implementing weight restrictions at 56 locations, covering a total of 262 kilometres nationwide,

Lázár added.

The Ministry took a similar first step in September this year, when it extended the existing but easily avoidable restrictions to all operators on roads around the Tokaj-Hegyalja region.

In today's post, the minister also reaffirmed his promise to continue consultations with Hungarian hauliers. This follows a ministry proposal suggesting that tolls paid by carriers would increase by 4.3% on motorways and by 35% on main roads, with the aim of directing transit traffic to motorways. Carriers protested against the decision, fearing that the increase could cause competitiveness and operational problems in the sector.
