Hungarian-Slovenian border crossings closed to lorry traffic due to snowfall

László Gábor, press officer at the Zala County Police Headquarters, said that, due to measures taken by the Slovenian authorities, the police on the Hungarian side are directing lorries to designated parking areas.

Passenger vehicles can still use the border crossings.

According to information from zaol.hu, the Slovenian Ministry of Interior's measure came into effect at 8 pm, and the closure applies to the M70 motorway crossing at Tornyiszentmiklós-Pince, as well as the Rédics border crossing.

According to a report by Útinform, road operators are taking extraordinary measures on Hungary's M1 motorway to ease traffic flow,

expanding traffic to three lanes towards the national border.

According to the report, reconstruction of the existing diversions between Biatorbágy and Bicske will alter the traffic flow between kilometres 19 and 37. On the affected section, this means that three lanes will be available for traffic heading towards Hegyeshalom and one lane for traffic heading towards Budapest. It is not yet known how long the new traffic arrangements will be in place.

Serious traffic jams were caused by heavy snowfall across the country on Tuesday evening, with traffic moving at a crawl for several kilometres on the M1 motorway. On Wednesday morning, road operators asked drivers to expect traffic jams between Szárliget and Hegyeshalom when travelling towards the country's border. Meanwhile, those travelling towards the capital were advised to take Route 1 between Tata and Bicske.

There were two accidents on the M3 motorway towards Budapest.

One lane was closed at the 170 km mark near Polgár, and another at the 151 km mark at the M30 junction. At Zebegény, a lorry jackknifed on the main road, causing traffic to come to a standstill at kilometre 21. On the Biatorbágy–Tatabánya section of the road, a bus was involved in an accident at Szárliget, which forced traffic to stop.
