At the beginning of his career, he started as officer in charge of investment for the Budapest Regional Directorate of the State Development Bank (ÁFB) in Hungary (1976-1977), and then became a Consultant for the Ministry of Water-Supplies in Mongolia (1977-1978). Between 1979 and 1987 he worked for the ÁFB again. In this period he was Internal Auditor (1979-1981), Head of the Economic Division (1981-1982), the Head of the Department of Investment Mechanism (1982-1985), and Head of the Department of Economy and Securities (1985-1987). He was Head of the Securities Office at Budapest Bank in 1987-1988, Deputy CEO of the bank as well as President of the Stock Exchange Council (Budapest ) in 1988-1989; between 1990 and 1993 he was Director for East Europe at James Capel & Company, London, and then Managing Director at Samuel Montagu Co. (1993-1995). Between 1995 and 1997, he was CEO of the Hungarian Credit Bank (MHB), Chairman of the Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT) in 1996-1998, as well as CEO (1997-1998), then President and CEO at ABN-AMRO Bank (Hungary). He served as Minister of Finances between 1998 and 2000, and Governor of the Hungarian National Bank in 1998-2000. Since the beginning of 2008 he has been member of the Supervisory Board at CIG Pannónia Life Insurance Plc. From 2010 he was Chairman of the Hungarian National Bank Supervisory Board.
