Hungary 2010 budget to come before Parliament on September 11
This stage will be preceded by lengthy and detailed debate, MTI said.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Socialist MPs will be meeting ministry representatives to review various chapters of the budget in 6 groups.
Chapters with issues still under discussion include local governments, healthcare, education, transportation and employment, the wire service learned from Socialist MPs.
The committees will have two days available to reach consensus on the financing of these areas in order to stay on track with the schedule, that is, a nod of approval by party leaders on Saturday, and by Socialist representatives on Monday. Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai will be present at both conferences, according to the wire report.
Bajnai will also discuss the budget with the leadership of Liberal party SZDSZ and its economic strategists. After earlier debates, the ruling Socialists said only one figure in the budget is carved in stone, namely the 3.8% deficit target which has priority over any other consideration.
In a statement of intent submitted to the International Monetary Fund, the government has also committed to trimming local government and public transport budgets. In order to meet the declared deficit target, the cabinet will have to tighten the strings on ministry budgets as well.
On the other hand, Socialist have made statements to the effect that Hungary will spend more on public safety and job creation. Among other plans, the resources of the “Road To Employment" program will come under review.
