"Clean energy isn't just the future, it's the present," states Bloomberg as the title of its selection where a variety of solar stations are featured worldwide. Mátra Power Plant's 16 megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant in Visonta is one of them.
The 16 megawatt solar power station is Hungary's largest plant in its category: it consists of 72,480 pieces of policrystalline solar cells with a rated output of 255 watts. The electrical energy that is generated by the Visonta station is capable of supplying green power to a small town of approximately 4000 people, while the supervision of the plant only requires 6 people. The investment value was HUF 6.5 billion, and as a result, Hungary's CO2 emission will decrease by 24,000 tons. Half of the investment was funded by the themselves, and the other half was granted by the Ministry of Economics in a form of a tax break, back in 2014. The supplier of the solar panels was a consortium of a Hungarian, Austrian, and Romanian company, Wire-Vill Kft. - IBC Solar GmbH - Energobit S.A. The 6/120 kV capacity transformers needed to connect to the circuit were supplied by CG Electric Systems Hungary Zrt. The solar power station started operating in the beginning of October, 2015, four months after the commencement of the installation.

Mátra Power Plant plans to further expand its capacity by additional 20 megawatt blocks costing HUF 22 billion each, in preparation for the future closing of the total 700 megawatt lignite-operated blocks. There are also plans to build a 600-megawatt capacity pumped storage plant, with an estimated cost of EUR 600 million.
