The 60 GHz band allows high-speed broadband connectivity in urban or suburban areas, complementing existing fiber. Facebook's Terragraph technology is a 60 GHz, multi-node wireless system that delivers a low-cost solution for high-speed wireless access. Combining WPON with Terragraph's mesh-routing and multi-hop capabilities allows broadband providers to wirelessly deliver gigabit services over wider areas with high reliability and meet growing demands for ultra-broadband access.
The main advantage of the technology is that it requires less cable works and high-speed broadband connectivity may be ensured right from the street, e.g. from lamp posts directly into homes.
Facebook’s partner in Hungary will be Magyar Telekom, and it could be an integral part of the future 5G network, as well.
The pilot programme with a few hundred customers will run for several months, with shorter or longer intervals. The company will set up about 100 antennas and network equipment on lamp posts.
