Strike at Hungarian Hankook plant continues
There was no reconciliation between the trade union and Hankook’s management on Tuesday, said Székely. The employees are becoming more and more determined, this is the eighth day of the strike and the employer is getting increasingly tense. He added that according to reports by the staff, production of the plant has declined drastically.
About 70-75% of the workers are on strike, but the number of those officially on sick leave has also increased, although this is not necessarily related to the walkout, he said. The trade union is ready to renegotiate the demands tabled in February, he added.
Mostly those participate in the strike that work in only one shift. As an emergency measure, Hankook has modified the contracts of those working in day shifts so that they could lawfully work in other shifts too. Last week, the trade union asked the management to contact the South Korean owners, but the request was refused. The trade union was contemplating contacting the owners itself.
The management told employees last week that those taking part in the strike are not entitled to the attendance bonus and the annual bonuses. As regards the positive incentives, the company raised the basic salary by 50% for those that do go to work and overtime pay was doubled for the duration of the strike.
