Second round of Ukraine-Russia peace talks ends, no breakthrough
Mykhailo Podolyak, a top adiviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the parties agreed to a possible ceasefire while civilians could be evacuated. The ceasefire would only apply in areas where evacuation of civilians is guaranteed.
They also agreed to deliver medicines and food to the areas where the fighting was fiercest.
IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE WARRING PARTIES HAD AGREED ON A SINGLE ISSUE.
However, Podolyak noted that the negotiations did not go according to their expectations. He did not say what they had hoped to achieve in the negotiations. A third round of talks could take place early next week.
“The second round of negotiations is over. Unfortunately, the results Ukraine needs are not yet achieved. There is a solution only for the organization of humanitarian corridors,” Podolyak in a tweet.
Russia’s chief negotiator, former Deputy Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, confirmed that both sides had reached an understanding on humanitarian corridors to enable the evacuation of civilians, state news agency RIA Novosti reported.
