MVM Zöld Generáció (Green Generation) Ltd., the renewable energy company of Hungary's state-owned MVM Group, is building a new solar power plant in the southern part of Kunmadaras.

Péter Bilinszky, business project director of MVM Zöld Generáció Ltd., said at the project opening event in Kunmadaras on Thursday that the power plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in the second quarter of 2023. The total planned cost of the investment is HUF 11.541 billion, of which HUF 4.270 billion is non-refundable from the Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme (EEOP), while the rest will be financed by the MVM Group from its own resources, he said.

The project will see the company install a 28.7 megawatt (MWp) solar power plant next to the Kunmadaras airport. The development is aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy systems in the company's own power plant portfolio, and thus in domestic power generation, and reducing the specific carbon emissions of the power sector, he said.

THE PLANT WILL BE ABLE TO PRODUCE AN AVERAGE OF 121,586 GIGAJOULES (GJ) OF ELECTRICITY PER YEAR, ENOUGH TO MEET THE ANNUAL ELECTRICITY NEEDS OF ALMOST 15,000 HOUSEHOLDS,

at the same time, the country's carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 32,950 tonnes per year, he said. The contractor selected through a public procurement procedure is Green Plan Energy Ltd.

The solar park will significantly contribute to the achievement of the targets set in the National Energy Strategy and the EEOP, as well as to the climate protection targets, Péter Bilinszky stressed.

MVM Zöld Generáció Ltd. is a renewable energy company of the MVM Group, currently operating 7 wind farms and more than 100 solar farms in Hungary. Within the framework of its medium-term strategy, it is continuously expanding its portfolio of environmentally friendly power plants, and is currently building 33 new solar parks with EEOP support under its Renewable Energy Programme, according to a press release issued on the occasion of the project launch.
