Aldi, Lidl and Spar react to the Hungarian government's latest plan
György Vámos, Secretary General of the National Trade Association (OKSZ) also gave his reaction to Portfolio, his statement can be read here:
Aldi wrote that they had only learned about the extension of the price freeze until 30 June and the draft mandatory promotions from the press, but they did not want to comment until they knew the details.
Lidl also said that they could not comment until they had seen the detailed regulations, but "our company has always placed great emphasis on supporting Hungarian families in line with the Hungarian government's efforts". The prices of hundreds of products have been reduced since January, they said, as an example.
Spar said they already offer discounts and promotions to "help shoppers spend as little as possible".
Gergely Gulyás, Minister leading the Prime Minister's Office announced at Thursday's Government Info that the price freeze will be extended until 30 June (the interest rate freeze will last until then anyway), and mandatory discounts will be introduced in shops from 1 July. The government has divided basic foodstuffs into 20 categories, one of which must be sold each week at a discount of at least 10% off the lowest price of the previous 30 days.
