Hungary's OTP wants Romanian exit, several big banks among the interested parties

Portfolio
It is no secret that OTP, Hungary's largest lender, is looking to sell its Romanian subsidiary, as it has failed to grow further in the Romanian banking market through acquisitions. Bloomberg understands that UniCredit, Raiffeisen, Erste and Banca Transilvania are interested in buying the Romanian operation of OTP.

Bloomberg has learned from sources familiar with the matter that,

  • UniCredit, Raiffeisen, Erste and Banca Transilvania, which is Romania's largest lender, are among those that have submitted non-binding offers,
  • the process is now entering its second round,
  • the deal could also include OTP's Moldovan business,
  • the transaction could value the Romanian financial institution at EUR 300 million or more.

OTP said that it is currently assessing the interest of potential buyers and will decide on the future of its Romanian subsidiary based on the outcome. At the end of 2021, the Romanian subsidiary had a 2.9% market share in the Romanian banking market, while OTP typically targets at least 10% share in its markets.
