Germany defence company may build plant in Hungary
There has been no official announcement yet, but it has already been discussed by Gábor Bányai, the government commissioner of the Southern Great Plain Economic Development Zone, and Paul Walf, head of the Central European Coordination Department of Rheinmetall AG.
The plant is expected to produce e-mobility components and hydrogen, so it is not just another arms factory, and Rheinmetall may also locate research and development activities here, which would be already military-related. According to VG, Rheinmetall's laser technology research could take place here.
According to preliminary plans, construction of the Rheinmetall plant could start in the second half of 2024. This is no small complex, as it would create thousands of new jobs.
Rheinmetall is the largest defence industrial partner of the Hungarian government: the German company has started or will start military production plants in Zalaegerszeg, Nyírtelek, Várpalota and Kaposvár, among others.
