CATL enters the Hong Kong stock exchange to finance the construction of the Debrecen plant

The world's largest battery manufacturer, China's CATL, is expected to raise at least $5 billion by going public in Hong Kong, Reuters reports. The company applied for a listing on Tuesday and plans to use part of the proceeds to build its factory in Hungary. The move could be the biggest issue on the Hong Kong stock exchange in four years.

CATL's listing in Hong Kong is noteworthy for a number of reasons. Firstly, according to Dealogic, it would be the largest listing in Hong Kong since Kuaishou Technology's US$6.2 billion IPO in 2021. The move is particularly important for Hong Kong's financial markets, which have lost momentum in recent years due to Chinese regulatory tightening and global financial volatility.

The company plans to use part of the capital raised to fund its €7.3 billion investment in Hungary.

This project is key to CATL's expansion strategy in Europe and is expected to significantly increase the company's global manufacturing capacity.

However, CATL's entry into Hong Kong is not without its challenges. The move comes amid rising geopolitical tensions, particularly after the United States in January added the company to its list of companies allegedly collaborating with the Chinese military.

CATL currently has a market capitalisation of RMB 1,400 billion and its shares have risen by around 61% on the Shenzhen stock exchange over the past year. The Hong Kong listing is expected to further strengthen the company's financial position and international presence.
