Uber introduces driving time limit in Budapest
While prolonged driving has been proven to increase the risk of fatigue-related accidents, most taxi companies in Budapest do not regulate how long their drivers can operate without rest. Uber drivers have received official notification today about the introduction of the Driving Time Limit feature:
from 21 April 2025, no Uber driver will be allowed to exceed 12 hours of continuous driving without rest.
Uber already operates this system in Africa, the Middle East, the United States, and other European countries, demonstrating maximum commitment to the safety of drivers, passengers, and other road users.
The Driving Time Limit feature continuously monitors the driver's hours through the Uber application and does not allow driving time exceeding 12 hours without rest. As the driver approaches the 12-hour limit, the application sends notifications reminding them to take a break. Once the driver exceeds 12 hours, the application automatically switches to offline mode for 6 hours (after completing any ongoing journey). The available driving time resets to 12 hours only after being offline for at least 6 hours. Of course, drivers can choose to take breaks and switch to offline mode at any time – reaching the 12-hour limit is not a prerequisite for taking a break.
The Driving Time Limit is just one element of a comprehensive safety toolkit that Uber has developed using global data, experience from millions of journeys, and data-driven analysis.
