Audi to partially relocate Q3 production from Hungary to Germany

German carmaker Audi has reached an agreement with its works council and management to partially transfer Q3 production from Győr to Ingolstadt, with the aim of optimising production line utilisation, Autopro.hu reported on Thursday.

The world premiere of the new Audi Q3 is scheduled for mid-June, with sales planned to begin in autumn. Initially, the entire production process will remain in Győr, Hungary, where the model has been manufactured since 2016.

According to the agreement reached in March, Q3 production will also commence in Ingolstadt, although internal sources suggest that this will not begin until autumn 2026 at the earliest.

This delay is due to the necessary preparations for compact SUV production, including the optimisation of the supplier network.

Audi plans to bring forward the production of a new, smaller compact SUV in Ingolstadt from 2027 to 2026, so introducing Q3 production at the German plant alongside this makes sense.

The partial production transfer will not present any challenges for the Győr facility, as the Cupra Terramar has been manufactured at Audi Hungaria since last year and Q3 production volumes have had to be limited due to the increase in production of this model.

Experts suggest that sharing production between Győr and Ingolstadt will provide greater flexibility in expanding compact SUV manufacturing capacity.

The Q3 is a strategically important model for Audi. With 215,174 units delivered in 2024, it was the brand's third best-selling model, behind only the Q5 (297,912 units) and the A6 (243,364 units).

After a disappointing 2024, Audi expects to increase sales this year thanks to the launch of several significant new models. The success of the third-generation Q3 in the market could be crucial in achieving these goals.
