Correction - Hungary real wages down 0.1% in Jan-Aug - Stats

(Corrects real wage rise to real wage decline)
Real wages in the January-August period declined by 0.1% from the first eight months of 2003, with the net average wage up by 7.0% at consumer price inflation of 7.1%, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Tuesday.

In the first seven months of the year real wages were 0.2% higher than in the same period a year before.

The gross nominal wage rose 8.0% year on year in January-August of 2004 to HUF 141,390 per month. In August alone gross wages were up by 7.0% in annual terms at HUF 138,845.

Net wages were 7.0% higher year on year in January-August at HUF 91,537 , while in August they stood at HUF 90,324, 6.3% higher than a year before.

Gross wages in the business sector rose 9.7% in the first eight months of the year and were 9.5% higher in August than a year earlier, while at budgetary organs they increased by 5.3% in January-August and by 2.5% in August alone. (The July rise at budgetary organs was 6.8% and 10.2%, respectively.)

Net wages in the business sector increased by 8.0% and went up by 5.2% at budgetary organs year on year in the first eight months. The respective increases for August were 7.8% and 3.3% (compared with 6.6% and 8.7% year-on-year rise in July).

The number of employed in the economy rose 0.9% year on year in January-August to 2.789 million, with a 1.5% increase in the business sector and a 1% decline in the number of employees at budgetary organs. In this, there was no change from July's figures.
