Hungary retail sales growth picks up in Aug to 5.1% yr/yr from 4% in July - Stats

The volume of Hungary's retail sales grew by 5.1% in August year on year, according to preliminary data adjusted for calendar effects, up from a 4.0% growth in the previous month, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday.
According to unadjusted figures, retail sales including car and fuel sales expanded by 4.4% in August (vs. +3.7% yr/yr in July) and were up 5.4% in the first eight months.

Retail sales edged up 0.6% from July, according to data adjusted for working days and seasonal effects, which compares with a 0.3% m/m increase in the previous month.

Growth in January-August came to 5.1% yr/yr, unchanged from January-July.

Calendar-adjusted food sales rose by 5.1% in August from the same month of 2005, up from +5.0% in the previous month. Food sales were up by 6.0 yr/yr in January-August. Non-food sales increased by 5.2% yr/yr vs. a 3.3% rise in July, and they were up 4.3% yr/yr in the first eight months, the KSH added.

Hungarian retail sales totalled HUF 532.5 billion in August at current prices, up from HUF 518.1 billion in July and HUF 496 bn and a year earlier.

Retail sale of cars and car parts dropped by 0.6% year on year in Aug (vs. -3.8% yr/yr in July) but rose 4.0% since the beginning of the year. Fuel sales were up by 6.6% yr/yr from the same month last year (against a 9.0% yr/yr growth in July) and jumped 9.9 % year to date.

Combined sales of cars, car parts and fuel were up 3.6% yr/yr in Aug, (vs. +2.8% yr/yr in July) and rose 5.4% yr/yr in Jan-Aug.
