Hungary's Budapest Airport has announced on Thursday that a direct air link will be launched by Swiss between Basel and Budapest's Ferihegy from 16 January. The city, located on the three-way border between Switzerland, France and Germany, is a brand new destination from Ferihegy. With the service the number of cities accessible directly from Budapest Airport increases to 102.
The lunch is timed for the peak ski season and many ski resorts of the Alps will be accessible from Budapest in just two-hours, BA said in a statement.

Swiss will fly four times a week, the airline's Avro RJ-100 aircraft will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The three most important Swiss cities are now all accessible by aircraft from Ferihegy. Passengers can fly to Geneva with Malév or easyJet practically any day of the week, while Zurich is serviced by Malév and Swiss, which operates three flights a day to Zurich (morning, midday and evening).

The new flight is expected to expand further the Hungarian-Swiss aviation market. Last year, air traffic between the two countries increased by 27.6%. In 2005 a total of 311,237 passengers travelled between the two countries, amounted to 3.85% of total traffic. In 2005, Swiss nationals accounted for 1.56 % of passenger traffic at Ferihegy.

David Newman, Subsidiary Director at BA, said the new Basel flight was not only a “great opportunity" for Hungarian travellers, but Hungarian tourism could also benefit from incoming Swiss traffic.

“This is our second new route announcement in just two weeks. We are continuing in our ambition to make Ferihegy the most successful airport in Central Europe, attracting new airlines, new routes and new passengers to Hungary," he added.

Gabriella Jávori, Swiss Country Sales Manager, said they are offering “unbeatable prices" (starting as low as HUF 7,900).

“Swiss International Air Lines continues to climb, improved by its positive figures, continued to increase its revenues in the third quarter of 2006," she added.
