New 'Gyurcsány package' comes later than expected
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány called for an extraordinary parliamentary session for 29 January (this Thursday) and there were expectations that the cabinet will announce specific measures aimed to handle the current economic issues.
The Premier said, however, that before that the public needs to fully understand how deep the crisis is and how many changes need to be implemented in a lot of areas. Specifics will not be brought to light before February, index.hu reported.
The bills aimed to tackle the current crisis will be revealed between mid-February and the end of March so that the measures could be implemented by 1 July, Gyurcsány said after holding a four-hour discussion with nearly 60 senior officials of different representative bodies and unions. He made no allusion as to what these measures could be, but noted that only part of them are likely to be in force by July and the rest would come only in September and next January. The PM said the government intends to implement a series of long-term measures.
Instead of presenting concrete plans the 29 January extraordinary parliamentary session will attempt to clear up what exactly the population is facing, and what comprehensive measures the situation requires, Gyurcsány said.
“We need a model change, reforms and new national economic and social strategy," he added.
