Consumer outlook in Hungary worse than a month ago

Portfolio
Consumer pessimism has continued to grow in Hungary, according to the April consumer confidence report of research institute GKI. In the wake of a major slump in late 2008, consumer outlook is becoming increasingly gloomy each month in 2009, mirroring EU trends.
The most noticeable negative change is in the expected unemployment rate in a 12-month outlook. Moreover, the report indicates heightened inflation fears and deteriorating prospects for the national economy.

At the same time, households' evaluation of their own financial situation has changed for the worse as well. 65% of respondents said they were struggling to make ends meet, 15% are running up a debt, while 11% said the costs of living are eating into their savings. Only 9% of the population is still able to save part of their income.

Respondents have also become more pessimistic about their financial outlook in the near future. A vast 91% majority is not expecting to be able to save in the next 12 months. The survey revealed that consumers also see more limited opportunity for purchasing expensive consumer goods at present or in the next 12 months, compared with the previous report in March.
