Will Hungary's real GDP grow in 2012?, Portfolio.hu has asked the participants, including the speakers at its Budapest Economic Forum conference, which hosts key local and international policymakers to discuss the economic outlook for Hungary and worldwide.
We believe the chart speaks for itself.
Economy Minister György Matolcsy confirmed yesterday the government’s 1.5% GDP growth target for next year, although he said several segments of the Hungarian economy need further stimuli to make the target attainable.
In view of the central bank’s latest GDP estimate (0.6%), the market consensus for 2012 growth (0.9%) and the cabinet’s own 1.5% forecast, on which the budget is built on, Matolcsy’s remarks may indicate that the government is also concerned about missing its growth target and therefore might contemplate implementing stimulus packages. The consensus estimate in the last (October) Reuters poll for Hungary's 2012 GDP growth plummeted to 0.9% from 1.9% a month earlier.
