Hungary EcoMin to appoint deputy state secretary Nátrán to lead Eximbank - paper
The paper said the two bills on the new financial transaction tax and the unified levy on insurance companies are “intact", no amendment proposals have been submitted to these by Monday, although the government approved the bills on the new taxes on 9 May. This is because of the split among the members of the committees that consult with the affected parties about the new taxes, it added.
There is no information when and how the expert consultations can continue and become meaningful.
The Hungarian Banking Association will delegate four members of its Presidency to represent banks in the talks with the cabinet. The body, to be lead by Dániel Gyuris, CEO of OTP Mortgage Bank, is preparing with specific proposals, e.g. they want to cap the transaction tax, something the government had originally planned to do but then dropped the idea.
One of the most serious recommendations is to tax cash traffic between companies that, as the banks claim, would be in line with the cabinet’s proposals to curb cash traffic.
"Further negotiation is needed to make the levy acceptable for both parties and also to help decrease household cash usage," Levente Kovács, the secretary general of the Association told commercial radio InfoRadio on Monday.
The Association of Hungarian Insurers is not sending a delegation only chief secretary Dániel Molnos to the consultations.
According to Napi Gazdaság, Roland Nátrán, deputy state secretary at the Economy Ministry, who had been at the helm of talks with the banks and insurers about the new taxes, is leaving his office, as Economy Minister György Matolcsy will appoint him to head Eximbank. The consultations could be led from the government’s part by state secretary Gyula Pleschinger and Ádám Balogh, deputy state secretary in charge of taxation issues.
