Raiffeisen Bank International is planning to set up its new operative centre in Nyíregyháza (eastern Hungary), local newswire MTI cited Deputy CEO Martin Melkowitsch at telling a press conference on Thursday. Bloomberg reported, however, that this is only a relocation of staff, not job creation.
Melkowitsch said the centre, which will be built with support by the government and the Nyíregyháza municipality, will hire 150 people after the completion of the first phase of the project and another 600 to 800 people can get jobs there during the next three to four years.
The jobs are back office, spokesman Michael Palzer told Bloomberg in an e-mailed response to questions. “This is a move of staff, not a creation of new jobs."
According to data sent by Raiffeisen to Portfolio.hu, the bank cut its headcount to 2,857 from 3027 in 2011. The bank streamlined its network of branches to 132 units from 142 last year.
It was reported at the end of 2011 that in scope of an efficiency boosting scheme they may not work one day every month or every two weeks in exchange for a voluntary 5-10% wage cut and it was also rumoured that some operations could be relocated from Budapest. This is how the idea came that back office jobs should be moved to cheaper regions such as the northern or eastern part of the country.
