Gross wages in Hungary grew 3.8% in October year-on-year, the Central Statistics Office said on Thursday. A similar rate of increase was witnessed in the year-to-date figures at the end of the month. In that period, full-time gross wages averaged HUF 227,800 per month.
In the first 10 months of 2013, full-time employees made HUF 227,800 per month before personal income tax. This resulted as the weighted average of HUF 238,700 in the private sector and HUF 223,700 in the public sector excluding public works programmes for the unemployed. The latter's pay was HUF 77,000. On the whole, gross wages in the 10 months to October exceeded the corresponding period of last year by 3.8%.
Coupled with low inflation, this figure translates into a 3.2% increase in real wages.
Average pre-tax earnings in the private sector grew 3.7%, which compares with 5.7% in the public sector not including those employed in public works programmes.
In a sector breakdown of gross wages, banking and insurance employees made the highest average amount (HUF 468,600), followed by IT and communications (HUF 426,300), and the energy industry (HUF 392,000). The lowest-paid employees were in hospitality (HUF 145,600), healthcare and social services (HUF 154,300) and agriculture and forestry (HUF 167,000), according to the Central Statistics Office.
