Hungary will halve the output of one of its four reactors at the Paks nuclear power plant for much of Thursday to deal with a mechanical problem, a spokesman for the facility said on Wednesday.
The state-owned power plant's operator MVM will reduce capacity of Unit 2 to 250 megawatts (MW) from 500 MW to fix the problem, Reuters reported. MVM did not provide any further details. Paks' four 500 MW reactors produce more than 40% of the electricity generated in the European Union nation, which often needs to import electricity from neighbouring countries.
The Paks NPP
The Paks Nuclear Power Plant has four VVER-440 type blocks which were put into operation between 1982 and 1987. The original 440 MW output was gradually taken to 470 MW via turbine and other reconstruction and efficiency boosting. New reconstructions increased the capacity of the four reactors to 500 MW in 2009.
The government decided this year to have two blocks built from 2026, for which it will take out a loan of up to EUR 10 billion from Russia.
