U.S. ban of Hungarians seen related to previously uncovered corruption case, says former NAV inspector

There may be a connection between Washington banning Hungarian persons, including state officials, from entering the United States and VAT frauds to the tune of billions of forints uncovered by a former inspector of Hungarian tax authority NAV, said András Horváth, the former NAV inspector, in an interview with local daily newspaper Népszava.
Horváth told the website of the paper that according to one of his sources, Hungarians attempted to corrupt two U.S. multinational companies (a wholesaler and another one that also produces), that were the buyers of a local grains trading company which operated an “invoice factory". He claims the latter firm was involved in VAT frauds amounting to billions of forints, but on an order superior the NAV investigation was called off.

Washington has banned fewer than ten Hungarians, including state officials, from entering the U.S. on the suspicion of their involvement in corruption. One of them is reportedly the President of NAV, one of her deputies and a lower-ranking NAV official. Their involvement has not been denied so far.

Horváth had provided detailed information about the above abuse to the National Bureau of Investigation (NNI) at a hearing in January. He had also said the investigation at NAV was called off on an order from above. He said it is not clear whether the persons involved in the corruption attempt were state officials or not.Zsolt Molnár, Chairman of Parliament's national security committee (of the opposition Socialist Party) has convened a meeting of the committee for today to discuss the travel ban. Besides secret service executives, János Lázár, head of the Prime Minister's Office, and Sándor Pintér, Minister of the Interior, have also been invited, index.hu reported.
