Hungary Fidesz group chief sees cause for next conflict with EU

A three-day government session of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition has ended on Friday. Fidesz parliamentary group leader Antal Rogán talked about the key decisions made and subjects discussed there, including inflation, immigration and the advertising tax.
Rogán announced a few decisions already on Thursday:
  • the national not-for-profit utility company will be launched in March;
  • the party wants to put judicial foreclosures in order
  • they are examining possibilities to extend elementary school and make sure as many children graduate from secondary school as possible
  • a new, large hospital needs to be built in Budapest
Rogán held yet another press conference on Friday morning.

Low inflation is the goal

The governing parties will continue to aim for low inflation, Rogán said in Mezőkövesd today.

He said low inflation can be maintained in 2015, as well.

In this respect he noted that the National Economy Ministry was assigned with the task of conceiving a study within one month on how different product prices track the changes, i.e. decline in the price of diesel or gasoline, for instance.

Advertising tax: lost revenues needs to be offset

When asked about the planned changes to the rate of the advertising tax (which should be cut to 5% from the current 50%, while including a wider range of media companies), Rogán responded that if revenues are lost to the amendment, these will need to be recovered and it’s a challenge the government needs to solve.

As regards the objections to the advertising tax which, critics say was designed specifically for German-owned RTL Klub, Rogán said “if you’re affected by a tax, of course, you loudly object to it."Consultation on immigration

Rogán has also announced that "Fidesz-KDNP are asking the government to initiate a national consultation on economic immigration."

Rogán noted several solutions have been suggested at the three-day session in connection with this matter.

These, he projected, will certainly lead to conflicts with Brussels.

The governing parties think people need to be asked in this national consultation “if they support the detention and immediate deportation of illegal immigrants from third countries."

Rogán said the number of asylum seekers in Hungary had surged in the past two years and most were economic migrants for whom there were no jobs in Hungary. Many used Hungary to enter the Euroepan Union and then head to western Europe, he added.

He reminded that in January alone, some 14,000 applications for political asylum were registered. If that trend continued, the number of immigrants -- most of them leaving their country for a lack of jobs -- could exceed 100,000 this year, he warned.

"We think this is extremely worrisome and therefore the Fidesz-KDNP party parliamentary group expressed it very clearly to the government that Hungary's gates must be shut to economic immigrants," Reuters cited him as telling a press conference.

Fidesz also wants to tighten asylum legislation, he said.

Rogán added that neighbouring Austria was expected to create more rigorous legislation by this summer, which meant the Hungarian government had to take action by then to prevent illegal immigrants landing back in Hungary.
