Commission confirms requesting clarification of new Hungarian asylum rules
“The Commission has sent an administrative letter to the Hungarian authorities on 6 October where we are asking for clarification on a number of issues pertaining to the way Hungary handles asylum and immigration policies and border control," a Deputy Chief Spokesperson of the EC told a daily press briefing in Brussels today.
“We now await a reply to that and then we will have a dialogue with the Hungarian authorities on the basis of their reply. We have asked to receive this additional information within two weeks," added Mina Andreeva.
When asked to confirm or deny the specific concerns local press has reported about, Andreeva responded that the Commission does not pursue a dialogue with Member States through the press when this concerns an administrative letter.
“The Hungarian law has not even been notified to us officially so it’s a bit difficult to look into the provisions. All the information we are basing ourselves on at the moment is what we are hearing from stakeholders and NGOs and that is precisely why we have outlined the number of issues that we are hearing and have asked for clarification to see them in the actual legal text," she concluded.
