Hungary Foreign Minister responds to harsh U.S. criticism
Ambassador Bell’s speech included criticism of the government’s migration policy, the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant, the “heavy-handed tactics" against civil society organisations, the curbing of media freedom, the increasing centralisation of power and corruption in Hungary. She has also warned against an unpredictable tax and regulatory environment, saying that possibly “the costs of uncertainty will price many potential investors out of a market."
“The American opinions voiced by the US Ambassador in her speech at the university have been heard before many times, and they do not contain anything new", Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told state newswire MTI on Thursday.Szijjártó underlined that as Hungary is a Member State of the European Union, and not of the United States, “the issues raised by the Ambassador are subject to discussion with the EU. In fact we have already discussed and resolved them".
“We know that the United States would like to see an increasing number of immigrants arriving in Europe, and clearly this is why it is voicing its opinions now. At the same time, Hungary is the only European country which has been able to stop the flood of immigrants at its borders", he added in a statement.
MTI has never published a separate report on Bell’s speech, only Szijjártó’s response. It only said that “the Ambassador’s speech included criticisms of the Government’s migration policy, the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant and corruption in Hungary."
