Uber responds to Hungary's call to stop service

The government cannot stand in the way of technological development, ride-sharing firm Uber said on Friday, one day after the cabinet called upon the company to cease its services in Hungary.
The Budapest government office fined an Amsterdam-based enterprise 300 000 forints last week, calling it to cease its illegal operation, state secretary János Fónagy said yesterday, referring to Uber.

The company issued a statement today headlined ‘The government cannot stand in the way of technological development’, as a response to the cabinet’s demand. It cited Estonia as an example, reminding that Prime Minister Taavi Rőivas met David Ploufee, strategic chief of Uber, last week during his trip to the United States, as well as members of Uber’s Board of Directors. At their meeting the parties discussed opportunities offered by sharing economy.

Estonia is one of the first European countries that is creating a legal framework for regulating ridesharing services.

"Everywhere in the world we see a strong rise of new economic fields. The state should not be an obstacle to technological innovation. Cooperation with Uber is groundbreaking," The Baltic Course cited Roivas as saying during the meeting in the U.S.

"Estonians have the world's most innovational digital solutions for communicating with the state. The fact that Estonia has taken up the leader role in supporting sharing economy is another example of how your state sees opportunities in the new economy," Plouffe added..
