Hungarians in Cluj-Napoca, Romania can now enjoy Uber services

Ride-hailing service Uber has announced in a brief statement on Thursday that it started to offer its services in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Regardless of the concise statement Uber did not pass up this opportunity to swipe at the Hungarian government.
After Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca is the second Romanian town to have the UberX service. The first trip is free of charge up to nearly HUF 3,000 (40 leu) for first registrants. The company said the following fares will be in effect in Cluj-Napoca:
  • Base fare: RON 1.7 (cc. HUF 119)
  • Cost per minute: RON 0.2 (cc, HUF 14)
  • Cost per kilometre: RON 1.7 (cc. HUF 119)
  • Minimum cost of ride: RON 7 (cc. HUF 490)
  • Cancellation fee (if you tap the cancel button after five minutes): RON 6 (cc. HUF 420)

As an example, Uber said a trip between the airport and the main square in town would cost HUF 1,400, half as much as a cab would cost. At the same time, the statement does not specify how Uber drivers will be taxed.

The company noted, though, that “after Bratislava, Cluj-Napoca is the second town where ethnic Hungarians live and where Uber is available."

“However, Uber had no choice but to suspend its services in Hungary as of 24 July."
