Hungary to start giant road and railway construction programme

Portfolio
Hungary will embark on a massive road and railway reconstruction project, the Prime Minister’s cabinet chief has announced on Thursday.

About the planned reduction of contributions

It is of key importance how the state budget will perform this year. The reduction of employers depends on this. Lázár confirmed there is a manoeuvring room in the budget but he stressed the structural balance of the budget must not be upset due to an excessive contribution reduction.

Direct link between downtown and airport

Some technical changes to transport could make it easier to reach downtown from the airport during the 2020 European Aquatics Championships, but realistically a direct public transport link should not be expected before the mid 2020s, János Lázár told journalists on Thursday. This is a sore point for the Orbán cabinet which they definitely want to remedy.

About Paks II

The authorization project in Hungary is in progress and constructive reconciliation is underway with the European Commission. Lázár said the project is on the right track.

Economic stimulus package in the making

Economy Minister Mihály Varga and his team are actively working on the previously announced package, Lázár said, but declined to provide details.

HUF 80 bn support to Pest County over the next three years

The grant will be available for micro and small business and local governments, among others.

HUF 2,500 billion for road building, HUF 1,100 bn for railroad development

The cabinet has decided to build about 1,000 kilometres of roads over the next five years. Some of these may be completed already in 2018-19.

As part of the project the government aims to:
  • build a motorway on M2 between Budapest and Vác;
  • connect cities with county rights with motorways.
A railway development programme is also to be carried out with a budget of HUF 1,100 billion, including the reconstruction of the Nyugadi and Keleti railway stations. The projects will be carried out from local and EU funds.

Consultations in V4 ahead of EU summit on Friday

The Visegrad Four countries intend to present a common standpoint and programme to the other EU leaders at the EU summit in Bratislava, Slovakia on Friday, Lázár said. One of the key issues is national sovereignty and what will happen to the European security policy. The view of the V4 is that a common military would be needed, as well as co-operation in border protection
