The lead of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party is impregnable in approval ratings. The lag of the opposition Socialist Party (MSZP) behind far-right nationalist Jobbik party has decreased and the Democratic Coalition is clearly more popular than green party LMP, according to the results of the latest opinion polls.
After pollster Tárki, Závecz Research Institute (ZRI) has also published the results of its January opinion poll, so now we have the opportunity to sum the key findings. Our job is not that easy, though, since out of the three main pollsters on our radar only ZRI publishes results on a monthly basis, whereas Tárki conducts quarterly polls and Medián does too, although more sporadically. Hence it seldom happens that we have current approval ratings data from all three of them at once. This time we don’t have Medián’s figures for January therefore we used their readings as of end-2016.
According to the average of the three think tanks, Fidesz remains way ahead of its rivals in terms of approval ratings among eligible voters. Its 32% reading indicates the same steady lead the party reached one year after its re-election. No meaningful shifts have been observed in the approval ratings of the other parties, either. Jobbik party has clearly lost some of its appeal since early 2015, but its lead remains over MSZP, which has been stagnating for 2.5 years now. The Democratic Coalition secured a cc. 5% approval rating among eligible voters, which would open the Parliament’s door to the party if elections were held this Sunday, whereas LMP would definitely be biting its nails with a 3% approval rating, and the “popularity" of Együtt (Together) is practically undetectable.
