Hungary foreign minister talks conflict with the Netherlands
Szijjártó said the key reason behind the debates is that there are pro-immigration governments in Europe and the Hungarian cabinet made it clear that it will not let in illegal immigrants to Hungary and is on the side of security. This irreconcilable conflict will remain also in the coming period because we will not back down and probably those on the other side will not say it either that Hungary is right, he underlined.
The minister expects Hungary to be criticised for this, also because of the upcoming elections in Germany and Austria, as the politicians will try to include Hungary in their campaigns.
As regards the remarks by the outgoing Dutch ambassador, he said that if an ambassador compares the motivations of the Hungarian government and terrorists, saying they are equal, he definitely steps over a red line, and that is unacceptable.
He added “I pursue a foreign policy that focuses exclusively on Hungarian interests, and we are refusing to be humiliated by anyone if they fail to respect the more than thousand year old Hungarian state."
Szijjártó said the success of good bilateral relations hinges on mutual respect. He noted that he has talked about this with Dutch foreign minister Bert Koenders, with whom they have disputes, but those have always been conducted on grounds of mutual respect and in a cultural fashion.Photo by Shutterstock
