As year-end approaches, retail sales start to rev up as usual. More and more people do their shopping online also in the holiday season. Shopping patterns change globally, and as smart phones and tablets become increasingly popular, actual stores are visited less and less and the weight of online purchases grows.
A few years ag, GKI Digital put together a list of the largest online stores, and now blokkk.com estimated their sales revenues for 2016.
In terms of net revenues, the largest local online store is Extreme Digital focused on consumer electronics. Media Markt and eMAG grew tremendously compared to 2015, and came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Tesco also managed to boost its online sales, but its related revenues are way smaller than at its biggest rivals.
Mall.hu, Media Markt, Libri, and Tschibo have public records of its online sales, whereas in the case of other online stores we have to lean on specific statements when assessing online sales data. A representative for Extreme Digital had said earlier that about 10% of the company’s sales revenues are generated in their stores, which gives us a fairly good estimate of the size of online sales. As regards eMAG, the starting year is 2014 for in that year mall.hu and eMAG came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Data show that eMAG had online revenues of about HUF 6.2 bn. According to press reports, eMAG boosted its sales by over 50% yr/yr in 2015, so it could have generated around HUF 9.5 bn. eMAG recorded an even larger increase in 2016, and its sales could have been about HUF 16 bn, Blokkk.com said.
