The multi-year trend of rising car sales continues in Hungary in 2019, as well. A total of 14,207 new passenger cars were registered in the country in May, 10.4% more than in the same month of 2018, Carinfo.hu reported.
A total of 14,207 new passenger cars were registered in Hungary in May, 10.4% more than in the base period. As for the first five months of the year, 60.962 cars were registered, which marks a 7.8% yr/yr rise.

This shows a continuation of the multi-year trend of rising car sales in Hungary.

However, we must add that the rate of growth has diminished. As regards the potential reasons behind the slowdown, the Association of Hungarian Vehicle Importers (MGE) said they assume sales have been growing less dynamically in part due to news reports on internal combustion engines, particularly diesel engines. The MGE also noted that the rate of expansion is behind of what they had projected earlier.

The government’s programme to assist large families [to buy 7-seated cars] is already showing on an interest level, and its impact on the new car market will be visible once the scheme is launched. Products distributed by importers fit the preliminary requirements on a rather wide scale. While we have observed a rising interest, the actual market processes could be evaluated only after July

, the MGE said in a statement.

Suzuki sold the most new passenger cars in May, a total of 1,857 of them, which was enough for a 13.1% market share. On the second spot we have Skoda with 1,437 cars sold and a market share of over 10.1%, followed by Ford, Opel and Dacia.
