85 percent of Hungarians support EU membership

85 percent of Hungarians are in favour of European Union membership, a new record in the latest survey by think tank Medián. This suggests that although Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (alongside his Polich counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki) stood up against the EU trying to link subsidies to the respect of the rule of law, blocking the next seven-year budget and recovery package, Hungarians are stubborn this way.

Every since the country's accession to the EU in 2004, Hungarians' support for EU membership has been constantly over 70%. This majority ebbed slightly to about 66% in the autumn of 2011 then reached and exceeded 70% after 2014. In 2018, the majority hovered around 80% throughout the year and reached a never-before-seen high of 85% in January 2019. This was the ratio of those that replied fully agree or agree with Hungary being a member of the European Union, Medián wrote in a Facebook post.

According to the researcher's latest survey, support for the country's EU membership among eligible voters was 85% in November 2020, as well. This was the result of a representative survey with a sample of 1,000 respondents. The lowest backing (77%) was found among voters of the ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition, followed by those without party affiliation (86%) and those that lean towards opposition parties (94%).
