Speaking at the ninth China-CEEC (Central and Eastern European Countries) summit on Tuesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán covered topics including global competition for coronavirus vaccines, the constructive cooperation of East and West, free global trade, and the use of Chinese vaccines in Hungary. The summit was held as a video conference this year, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Although a full year has passed, we are in the same situation as last spring: the whole world wats to buy a product whose supply is far below demand. A year ago it was ventilators and masks, and now it is vaccines,

Orbán said at the summit, stressing that vaccination is the solution to the crisis.

As the lives of people, as well as economic performance, are at stake we need a more constructive East-West cooperation based on mutual respect and goodwill, Orbán said, adding that the recent agreement on investments between  the EU and China was a step in the right direction.

Hungary is thankful to the People’s Republic of China and to Xi Jinping in particular for all the help they have offered in this difficult period. Chinese businesses have taken use of investment opportunities provided by Hungary’s economic protection action plan and have announced major projects in Hungary, making China its biggest foreign investor in 2020, Orbán said.

Hungary supports free and fair global trade, which now has bigger significance than ever, Orbán said. Congratulating China on creating the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partneship (RCEP), the biggest free trade zone in human history, Orbán also expressed hope that talks on future cooperation could begin between the RCEP and the EU.

During the summit, Orbán also tipped his hat to the Chinese scientific community for developing a COVID-19 vaccine. Hungary has signed up for Chinese firm Sinopharm’s vaccine and is expected to receive the first shipment next week.
