Entrepreneurs and businesses active in taxi or personal transport services may apply for subsidies on buying electric cars from the middle of June 2021, the ministry said in a statement.

The government has earmarked HUF 3 billion for this purpose. Applicants may each receive 45% of the car’s price or up to HUF 15 million.

The HUF 3 bn envelope is 50% bigger than last year’s amount, but the biggest change is the subsidy offered per person.

This year, taxi drivers may apply for a subsidy of up to HUF 15 million. In the 2020 version, the government offered up to 55% of the price of an electric car that cost no more than HUF 15 million, which translated to HUF 8.25 million maximum.

At present it is not known how much the maximum amount of the subsidy for non-taxi drivers will be in the upcoming general e-car programme will be. Last year, it was capped at HUF 2.5 mn. If it remains unchanged, taxi drivers could be eligible to six times the amount when buying an electric car.
