Taxi drivers demand 18% tariff hike

Taxi driver unions believe an immediate 18% tariff hike would be justified, while the Budapest leadership is of the opinion that the emergency regulations in effect do not allow for any hike in fees and tariffs decided by the local government, Világgazdaság reported on Tuesday.

There is disagreement between the regarding the legal interpretation of the relevant decree, Zoltán Metál, president of the National Taxi Federation (OTSZ), told the paper. The federation has therefore proposed asking for a statement from the government office jointly.

There is little chance of a tariff hike before 1 January, but the parties will set up a work committee to flesh out the details in the meantime, Metál said.

The OTSZ will submit background materials detailing how the expenses of taxi drivers have changed in recent years, which they believe justify at least an 18% tariff hike. It should be noted that Metál earlier mentioned a 30% raise to the current prices, which have been in effect since 2018, Világgazdaság added.

The emergency regulations in effect do not allow for any hike in fees and tariffs decided by the local government, the Budapest city council told Világgazdaság, adding that talks between the city and taxi unions are ongoing
