Omicron variant causes more than half of new cases in Hungary
Private laboratory Neumann Labs was the first to detect the Omicron variant in a sample in Hungary about two weeks ago. The number of people infected with the new strain has been rising ever since.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that Omicron is becoming, or already has become, dominant in several countries, including in Denmark, Portugal and the United Kingdom, where its numbers are doubling every one and a half to three days, generating previously unseen transmission rates.
"In our laboratory, we conducted a series of tests to determine from the positive samples we collected whether or not Omicron could have caused the infections, and
in the last one hundred samples we have found that 60% of the infections were caused by the Omicron variant,
Miklós Nyíri , managing director of the lab told ATV's news programme.
