Geothermal energy will replace gas heating in Hungary in the future - minister

Speaking to Hungarian journalists after a meeting of EU environment ministers, László Palkovics said that Hungary wants to achieve a target of consuming no more than 3-4 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year in the next 30 years, compared to the current 11.5 billion cubic metres.

The plan is to fully replace the predominantly (approx. 70%) gas-based district heating systems, with geothermal energy, but a plan for biomass-fuelled energy is also being developed. The Hungarian plans under implementation are therefore about domestically produced energy sources, with much less environmental impact, he underlined.
