Special support for small Hungarian butchers
Small butchers operating as micro-enterprises can apply for a total of HUF 4.5 billion in aid at the beginning of the year,
the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) said on Monday. According to the Ministry's plans, more than 1,000 butcher shops could receive up to HUF 3 million per shop. The Ministry of Agriculture is aware of the difficulties facing the retail sector, the statement quoted Agriculture Minister István Nagy as saying.
The Minister also pointed out that making basic services more accessible in terms of quantity and quality will greatly increase the population retention capacity of small settlements. Among these, access to food also plays an important role.
He explained that small butcher shops can create short supply chains, contribute to achieving and maintaining food security and also provide jobs for local people.
Serious trouble for the small ones
In addition to rising energy costs and inflation, and the resulting significant drop in retail sales, the price cap on specific products has also put retailers in a difficult situation.
In particular, less capital-intensive operators within the sector, with a smaller and narrower product range, face serious problems as they cannot recover their losses from the price cap on other products.
In addition, the blatant 44% rise in food prices has led shoppers to turn increasingly to larger retail chains. The price caps on certain meats (chicken breast, chicken tails and pork legs) put butchers with a narrow profile in a particularly difficult situation.
