Paid parking all over Budapest? - Drastic proposal submitted to Municipality

The Clean Air Action Group has submitted a comprehensive package of proposals to the Budapest Municipality, daily newspaper Magyar Nemzet reported on Friday. The proposal would not only seriously affect parking, but also transport and even electric cars.

The Clean Air Action Group argues that the Municipality of Budapest has done little to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the last two years, and therefore they propose a complete reorganization of car traffic and parking in the capital.

They say that after the renovation of the M3 metro line, the bus lanes on Üllői út, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út and Váci út should be turned into a cycle path and green space, reducing traffic on the capital's most congested main roads.

The proposal would also have a major impact on parking in the capital: according to the Clean Air Action Group, the outer districts are essentially used as car parks by people arriving by car from the agglomeration, which is why they propose extending paid parking to the whole of the capital and increasing the fees.

THe new tariff system WOULD ALSO AFFECT LOCAL RESIDENTS, WITH THE clean AIR action group CITING DISTRICT 8 AS AN EXAMPLE, WHERE RESIDENTS CAN PARK FOR AN ANNUAL FEE OF 18,000 to 30,000 FORINTS.

The parking discount for company and hybrid cars would also be abolished. As for the rationale behind the latter proposal, the group argues that the production of electric cars also has a high environmental impact.
