Austria also extends border control to stem illegal immigration

Portfolio
Austria will extend checks at its border with Slovakia by 20 days, joining Poland and the Czech Republic, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced on Thursday.

Border controls were introduced - on a temporary basis - on 4 October to cut off human smuggling routes in response to increasing migratory pressure. The measure was originally due to expire on Saturday but is now extended until 2 November. The move was taken in coordination with the Slovak security services.

According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, "targeted" checks are being carried out at border crossings to screen out human smugglers, with a view to minimising disruption to commuters. At the same time, the border area is being placed under increased surveillance.
