Sales of electric cars have gone up in Hungary

Although the market for new cars shrank in Hungary last year, sales of electric cars increased strongly in Hungary, HVG reports. However, they also point out that sales of environmentally friendly vehicles were relatively low.

On Wednesday, the 2023 new car registration statistics from Datahouse arrived, showing that a total of 107,720 new passenger cars have been registered in Hungary in 2023. This represents a decrease of 3.4% compared to 111,540 units a year earlier.

Last year, purely electric vehicles accounted for a small share of the new car market in Hungary, only 5.4%, with a total of 5,807 units sold. Plug-in hybrids also accounted for a similar share of the market, with 5.1%, with a total of 5,546 units sold last year.

This brings the combined market share of electric cars and plug-in hybrids to 10.5%.

The figures show a significant increase compared to the previous year, with sales of purely electric cars up 23.4% and plug-in hybrids up 13.7%.

Green plates are also on the rise, with a total of 84,454 issued by the authorities by the end of November 2023.

The Hungarian Association of Motor Vehicle Importers predicts that up to 100,000 new cars could be on the market in Hungary in 2024. Within this figure, the number of electric cars sold is expected to reach around 7,500 units.
