Has Hungary also given in on NATO enlargement? - Swedish PM invited to Budapest
According to the invitation letter, the talks will focus on Sweden's accession to NATO and the strengthening of Hungarian-Swedish bilateral relations by deepening mutual trust, said Bertalan Havasi.
Türkiye indicated yesterday that its legislature could decide as early as this week on the Scandinavian country's membership of NATO.
The debate in the Grand National Assembly is due to take place on Tuesday, state media reported on Monday, with a vote likely the same day. The AFP news agency reported that the vote could be held on Thursday.
Sweden and Finland asked to join the military alliance in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But NATO member Türkiye raised objections over what it said was the two countries' protection of groups that Ankara deems terrorists, Reuters reported.
Türkiye endorsed Finland's membership bid last April but, along with Hungary, it kept Sweden waiting until it toughened its stance on local members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which the European Union and United States also list as a terrorist group. In response, Stockholm introduced a new anti-terrorism bill that makes being a member of a terrorist organisation illegal.
Hungary has previously pledged not to be the last to accept Stockholm's application for membership of the military alliance.
