BYD's Szeged plant will be much bigger than originally planned
Originally, Pick was going to build a new plant in the 300-hectare industrial park in Szeged, but this was abandoned a few years ago. The Chinese giant gradually applied for construction permits on the land purchased from Pick until March this year, by which time the land had already been handed over to them. However, the site is now 'full' and no more buildings can be built on the 90 hectares.
According to plans submitted to the building authority for approval on 5 June, ground and foundation works for an assembly plant 500 metres long and 200 metres wide - or 10 hectares - could start soon on the site next to the originally purchased area. This is the largest BYD factory building we know of so far.
completed, it would be the largest building ever built in Szeged.
And this is just one of many. There would also be a 435-metre-long painting plant, a 370-metre-long bumper production plant, and an 'L' shaped link building. Although it is still expected that the new production site will be located along the M43 motorway, it would reduce the distance to the Liliom Residential Park in the Béketelep district, the closest residential area to the future factory. But the sight of the plant will not be so disturbing for locals, because at the end of the housing estate towards the factory - where there is now a field - a council decision has been taken to plant woodland along the houses, mostly to replace trees felled for construction work, the portal says.
Although there is still no official announcement from China, the BYD factory in Szeged would be built over several years, according to earlier news, and the industrial site will be handed over to the Chinese by the end of the year.
